Investors are puzzled. The data, related to economic activity, were not numerous this week, especially in the United States where bad and good news alternate. To comfort themselves, they have relied on corporate results, but here too, they are faced with good news and bad news.
Without a compass, therefore, the world stock markets, after much hesitation, have dispersed. The US, Japanese and emerging indices, including China, ended slightly lower, while European markets remained in the green, including the CAC 40 which, since March 15, has posted 17 records.
This unstable situation is expected to last until the major central banks (Fed, ECB and BoE) unveil their strategy to end inflation. Plans that are difficult to anticipate because they will have to integrate the consequences of the banking crisis and the effects of the second round in addition to rising consumer prices.
